For this series, I was challenged to capture 6 different images in a single location focusing on photographic techniques and exploring aesthetic. While on winter break, I paid a visit to my old stomping grounds - the Westlake School for the Performing Arts, an institution where amazing talents are discovered, skills are honed, and dancers are bred. For 14 years, I rigorously studied the discipline of ballet (and many other forms of dance) in the studios pictured. Throughout the seemingly endless rehearsals, the hectic competition and recital seasons, and the humbling international trips, I have made lifelong friendships and developed a strong sense of community and teamwork. For 14 years, this place was my home.
The City Manager of Daly City has proposed selling the property that houses Westlake School for the Performing Arts and has no plans for relocation of the studio. If the property is sold and WSPA is displaced, hundreds if not thousands of Bay Area youth will no longer have a safe space to learn about the performing arts. The petition below calls Mayor Gonzalo "Sal" Torres and City Manager Patricia Martel to reconsider displacing not only a highly renowned and globally recognized school but also a place that many young students and their families call home.
